It’s the hustle of the holiday season and my daughter, at her young age, has already figured out that if she makes a list of things she wants, she may just find them under the Christmas tree on December 25th. Perhaps her mother and I are partially to blame, after all every time we walk through the mall and she asks for everything from shoes to a Barbie ® Escalade ® we tell her she has to wait because she might get it for Christmas. ‘Might’ is the operative word.

We could never afford to give her everything that she asks for, not to mention it wouldn’t be beneficial to her development to be handed everything she desires, but nonetheless she continues to make her list, I just pray she forgets what is on her list by the time Christmas day actually rolls around.

We’re like that aren’t we? We hope that people will never forget the good stuff that we do, and worry that they’ll never forget the dumb things that we’ve done. You must know where I’m going with this. Not yet? Allow me to continue then.

There is one who is like that – God. When we mess up there’s a fool proof way to ensure that our sin isn’t documented for all of time, it’s by seeking forgiveness. “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19 NIV)

There was a collective sigh of relief as you just read that, I know because my ears popped. No one wants to be remembered for the wrong they’ve done, or the promises that they’ve made and haven’t kept. We do, however, love to be remembered for the good that we do, and God loves to remember us for it too. Remember Cornelius (Acts 10)? He gave to the poor and prayed regularly, because of that what he did came up as a memorial to God. God is making a list of the good that you do, and that good can go up as a memorial to Him.

There are many homeless, family-less, and lonely people all around us. Over this holiday season, let’s not be caught up in making lists of expensive gifts that we hope for, let’s concern ourselves with one list – a memorial list, not to be man pleasers, but to be God pleasers. Take some time over this holiday season and do good for those around you who are in need and see that what you do is pleasing to God
