Norm asked if I would look after this segment of the Half Time Report
– I said No!
In fact a few times I said no and he didn’t seem to get it. Then at a weak moment when I was struggling for the meaning of my existence – Norm suggested that this was probably it. You have to know Norm!

Long Distance Rider:
The Zone; by Dennis Hillis
Only those who have experienced the monotony of long distance riding really understand the zone. The zone exists at different places for different people. For some it is after three four or five hours of riding. For others it doesn’t come until the second day of a twelve hour ride. Still others, through practice can ener the zone after only a few minutes in the saddle. . It is a place between conscious awareness and the ethereal relm of soul travel.
In the zone , while traveling at 100, 120, or 140 KPH with your drag pipes rumbling and echoing off the canyon walls of an underpass, you can travel in your mind to Egypt Cairo and the pyramids, or London and do a trip around the London Eye. You don’t need a MP3 player cause you can hear any sound or song your memory can conjure up. I have spent hours listening to a marching band in my head trying desperately to change the station, in the tenth hour of a twelve hour ride.
Hours turn into minutes and a tank of gas is gone in seconds it seems. In the zone you can converse with your spouse debate with your boss, counsel with the wisdom of Solomon. In the zone you can design your future, reinterpret your past and get above your present.
In the zone you can converse with the creator, uninterupted, undistracted he rides with you, surrounds you whispers to you. You are not alone in the universe. An empty road, and an empty sky. The silence that the wind brings envelopes you in his presence – if you want.
The zone is the thing – a mystery where He abides.
